I do not believe that in order for be to speak I must be interpellated into a victim of a dreaded date or embarrassing experience, or appeal to your sense of pity on to why my life sucks and Britney Spears will change it.
People think I'm nuts for wanting to see "an ex-mickey mouse club dopeaddict who shaves her head bald for fun and drives around carelesslywithout panties". Basically, I love Britney Spears because she never ceases to re-invent herself. Being as this is her first major tour in 5 years through such trials and tribulations of a dysfunctional marriage, drug abuse, and tons of media exploitation - she has taught young girls like me (who watched "Baby One More Time" retire at #1 after 65 days on being on MTV Total Request Live - surpassing both *NSYNC & BSB) that you can overcome the labels society puts on you. She fights to overcome the bullshit handed to her. I have such mad respect for this lady that I'm serious about wanting to see her in concert.
I feel like I deserve these tickets because, in a way, I overcome the norms of society like Britney. As a Vietnamese young lady of Chinese decent, I spend a lot of my time working for the Southeast Asian community - whether it be organizing a rally against unjust deportation or mentoring young high school students on their identity and history. I believe that in this world, the education system lacks proper historical discussion on the Vietnam War - so I feel like it is part of my duty to share what I have learnt with the younger generations. With a family that went through the refugee experience, I know how hard it is to communicate with parents who shy away from telling the story (oftentimes due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Nevertheless, I'm a student activist - 19 years young first generation college student attending UC San Diego as a second year. I take my school work seriously as a Biology Major with a Minor in Public Service. I'm not doing the Pre-med thing because it is what my mother wants, but it is a path that I've been desiring for myself because I want to change the world. I really don't want to be the get-rich kind of Doctor, but rather the one that will help out underrepresented communities. I would love to go to Vietnam one day with Operation Smile and help young children with cleft lips who cannot afford the surgery. I myself experienced the hardships in attaining affordable health care as a full-time student. Accordingly, purchasing something as expensive as Britney Spears tickets is a luxury I can not give into. BUT - I still love dancing and singing to her old songs. Yes - I know the dance routine to "Oops, I Did it Again." (=
